Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. Osteopathy is a safe and effective form of physical medicine that reduces or removes pain by treating muscles and joints. Patients of all ages can obtain benefit. The treatment is tailored to suit.
At your initial visit, which can be up to an hour, we take a thorough history of your symptoms, your medical history and details about your activities, diet and lifestyle.
We then conduct a careful and detailed assessment of your movements and areas of muscle tension to establish a diagnosis. It may be necessary to do some orthopaedic or neurological tests.
Every patient is different and the treatment plan is always tailored to the individual. Osteopathic treatment generally consists of soft tissue massage and stretching of the muscles, mobilisation of affected joints and gentle manipulation.
Osteopaths aim to restore normal movement and posture which may mean treating areas that are distant from the area that hurts.
Treatments are mostly gentle and whilst there may be a little soreness the next day, this is quite normal and quickly gets better. It feels abit like having done too much execise the day before.
Osteopathic treatment can help many musculoskeletal conditions. These include the common aches and pains due to strains, falls and overuse, as well as the more long-term back and neck probems. It can often alleviate the problems associated with stress and tension including chronic headaches.
Osteopathy is for all of you
The following is a list of some problems treated by osteopaths. The list is by no means complete and if you have any queries, please telephone for further advice.
Osteopathy is effective for the following common conditions:
Your osteopath can also advise on posture, exercise routines, ergonomics and life style changes to build on the positive effects of regular osteopathic treatment.
Everyone needs an initial consultation to establish the cause of the problem and determine the appropriate treatment.
This involves a comprehensive review of your medical history and a thorough physical examination, your osteopath asks you to perform a series of simple movements to identify any painful or problem areas.
Generally, this involves undressing to your underwear, so that your structural imbalance, spinal and joint mobility can be fully assessed.
This initial examination may also include some medical tests, such as checking blood pressure. If necessary, blood tests or X-rays may be recommended to provide a full understanding of your condition.
Following that consultation (which lasts 45 minutes to an hour), your osteopath will agree a treatment plan (and timescale), according to your individual needs.
Thereafter, a session of treatment (usually 30 to 40 minutes) involves a combination of techniques: joint mobilisation, rhythmical articulation, stretching, deep tissue massage and cranial manipulation.
A session of osteopathic treatment is relaxing. You will usually enjoy immediate pain relief, depending on your particular problems.
Some people may occasionally experience temporary stiffness after treatment, which is normal. This usually settles within a day or so.
